Mary Ann Elizabeth Culpepper

F, (circa 1820 - )
MotherCatherine Bell (c 1797 - c 1865)
Birth*circa 1820 Mary was born at Edgefield District, South Carolina, circa 1820.
(free wh female 10-15) 1830 Census1 June 1830 Mary was probably a free white female, age 10 and under 15, in John Jefferson Culpepper's household, on the 1830 Census at Upson Co., Georgia. Unaccounted for is 1 Male 5-10..1
(free wh female 15-20) 1840 Census1 June 1840 Mary was probably a free white female, age 15 and under 20, in John Jefferson Culpepper's household, on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 at Chambers Co., Alabama.2
Marriage*12 December 1841 She married Robert L. Johnson at Chambers Co., Alabama, on 12 December 1841.
Married Name12 December 1841  As of 12 December 1841, her married name was Johnson.
Census1850 She was listed as a resident in the census report at Chambers Co., Alabama, in 1850.
Death* She died at Alabama
Biography* According to the 1850 census, Mary Ann Elizabeth Culpepper was born in South Carolina. Her parents, John Jefferson and Catherine (Bell) Culpepper, have not been located in the 1820 census but were probably living in Edgefield District, SC near Barbary Bell, Catherine (Bell) Culpepper's widowed mother. Presumably, in 1823 or 1824, Mary Ann Elizabeth would have moved to Georgia with her parents where her father is noted in Monroe Co., GA taking part in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. He is next noted in an 1829 deed living, presumably with his family, in Upson Co., GA. Mary Ann Elizabeth is first noted as a 10-15 year old female in the household of her parents in the 1830 census of Upson Co., GA. Mary Ann Elizabeth's father was still listed in Upson Co., GA when he took part in the 1832 Gold Lottery and since Mary Ann Elizabeth's younger brothers were born in Georgia according to census records, the family probably remained in Upson Co., GA until at least 1835. Some time after this, possibly in 1835 or 1836 when the Francis G. and James Culpepper families moved to Alabama, or in 1837 after the marriage of Mary Ann Elizabeth's older brother, John Jefferson Culpepper moved his family to Chambers Co., AL. One female, 15-20 years of age was noted in the John J. Culpepper household in the 1840 Chambers Co., AL census, presumably Mary Ann Elizabeth.
12 Dec 1841, "Mary Ann E. Culpepper" married "Robert L. Johnson" in Chambers Co., AL and "John J. Culpepper" signed the certificate. In the 1850 Chambers Co., AL census, the farm of Robert Johnson, Mary Ann Elizabeth's husband was located between the land of her father, John J. Culpepper, and the land of her younger brother, Robert J. Culpepper. Although she was listed as "Mary Ann E. Culpepper" in the marriage record, she was listed as "Elizabeth" in the 1850 census record. A 40 year old James Johnson born in South Carolina was also living with Robert and Elizabeth. Perhaps he was Robert's older brother. A 16 year old Marion Weldon and a 12 year old George Weldon, both born in Georgia, were also in the household and have not been identified. Unfortunately, the family has not been located in 1860 census records of Chambers Co. or Randolph Co., AL and no more is known about Mary Ann Elizabeth.

Robert Jefferson Culpepper was known to his great-grandchildren as "Great Grandpa Jeff" or "ole e Pa." His parents were recorded in the 1830 census of Upson Co., GA and this is where Robert is presumed to have been born. The 1900 Soundex for Alabama shows Robert J. Culpepper in Albertville, Marshall Co, AL with a birth date of July 1828 but since he was not noted in the 1830 census this can probably be discounted. By 1840, Robert had moved with his parents to Chambers Co., AL where he was noted as one of two males 5 to 10 years of age in the household of John J. Culpepper. Robert emerges in Chambers Co., AL marriage records in 1848 and by 1850 was listed with his wife in the 1850 Chambers Co., AL census living next door to his sister and near his parents.
Robert J. and Louraney (Cardwell) Culpepper hosted the wedding of his younger brother, William Washington Culpepper, and her younger sister, Ferby Cardwell, at their home 23 Dec 1855. Their father, John Jefferson Culpepper, was the second bondsman. At some point after this, Robert J. Culpepper apparently moved his family to Randolph Co., AL. He is noted in land records purchasing 39.86 ½ acres in the SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of section 3 in Township 22 Range 10 of Randolph Co., AL. Unfortunately, the date is illegible. The land appears to be just north of the 159.46 acres of land which Robert's father, John J. Culpepper, obtained 22 Aug 1850. Robert and his brother, William, and their parents were noted living next to each other in the 1860 census of Almond P. O. District, Randolph Co., AL.

After the war, Robert returned home and he was noted with his wife and children in the 1870 census of the Louina P. O. District (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL. His brother, William Washington Culpepper, was still living next door and his parents were also living nearby, all apparently on the same land that they were on before the war. By 1880, Robert had apparently moved his family to Clay Co., AL R. J. Culpepper was noted with his wife and younger children in Wesobulga District, Clay Co., AL in 1880 census records.
According to an article from the Guntersville Advertiser 10 Oct 1916, Robert J. Culpepper and his wife had moved to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL 28 years previously. This would have been approximately 1888. A son, John James Culpepper, located his family in what is known today as Albertville, Marshall Co., GA. Other members of the extended family settled across the county line in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. Unfortunately, the 1890 U. S. census burned and so it is not possible to see exactly how everyone was situated at the time. What is known is that, according to her obituary, Mrs. R. J. (Louraney Cardwell) Culpepper died in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL in 1894. After the death of his wife, Robert apparently split his time at the residences of his children. Robert J. Culpepper was noted in Albertville, Marshall Co, AL in the 1900 census. He was listed as having been born Jul 1828 although, since he was not noted in the 1830 census and was listed in later census records as being age 19, 30, 40 and 49, the 1828 reference can be discounted. Robert Jefferson Culpepper's daughter, Arkansas (Culpepper) Williams, and her two young sons, "Larkis" and "Charlie," were living with him. In 1910, Robert was still living in Marshall Co., AL was noted in the Marshall Co., AL census living with his son, John J. Culpepper. A great-granddaughter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, wrote, 19 Jan 1979: He carved & made fancy furniture, beautiful beds among other things. He had a collection of old guns.... He had a hobby of keeping a diary, of the weather and happenings of the day.... My Grandpa Jack [John James Culpepper] & family along with ole e Pa & family all moved here to Sand Mt. from Randolph or Clay [the family was in Clay Co., AL in the 1880 census] in covered wagons in 1883.... Ole e Pa Jeff... walked lots of miles almost every day, even in his 80's.... One more thing about ole e Pa Jeff, he carved and made spinning wheels to spin yarn then weave it into yarn for cloth in those days."
Mary Lillian Butler Pierce added in s 23 Apr 1993 letter that "Robert Jefferson Culpepper carved and made furniture in his younger days - beautiful pieces - and each piece painted black." 20 Jan 1979, Mary Lillian wrote that her great-grandfather had lived with her grandparents in the same house that she is living in now: Lola Martin said ole e Pa Jeff's room was upstairs, steps are steep here and only heat he had up there & light was a lantern. Scratches are still on the wall up there where he would strike a match to light the kerosene lantern. Was a stacked chimney in the middle of the house, heat from it helped keep the walls of that little room warm. Said he never had a cold or was sick in winter.
Mary Lillian Butler Pierce added in a 23 Apr 1993 letter: Lola Martin was right stairs were steep, and still are. Scratches are still on the wall. I painted or painted part of that little room up stairs a few yrs ago, and it's hard to find the scratches now.
According to a great-granddaughter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, Robert Jefferson Culpepper received a monthly pension of $15.00 from the State of Alabama for his Civil War service. In a 3 Sep 1994 phone conversation, Mary Lillian noted that her great-grandfather would buy a gallon of "white whiskey" with 15 cents from his Confederate Pension money and add a teaspoon of it to his breakfast coffee "instead of cream" to make "Lace Coffee." The following is from the 10 Oct 1916 issue of the Guntersville Advertiser published in Guntersville, Marshall Co, AL: R.J. Culpepper is 86 years old and enjoys good health for a man of his age. He has lived on Sand mountain 28 years [arriving circa 1888]. Uncle Jeff as he is familiarly called, has 8 living children, 53 grandchildren, 98 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, which is, we believe, getting pretty close to the record in this county.
Robert Jefferson Culpepper died three years later, apparently while visiting his grandson, Charlie J. Williams, across the county line in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. Two days later, Charlie wrote his half-brother, Larcus Culpepper who, according to Mary Lillian, was living in Texas: larcus I am Very Sorry But he had to go Some time and I guess now was as good time as eny they beried him at Corinth [south of Joppa, Cullman Co., AL] and then they taking up granma and moved here [her] up there and Beried her Beside him.... he was awfull Bad and he died that night about twelve oclock.....
Mary Lillian added in a 18 Jan 1979 letter: Great Grandpa Jeff has a war emblem by his tomb shaped like a 3 or 4 leaf clover, made of iron or steel. He had a pocket watch with a chain & watch fob looked like the iron emblem at his grave. My grandfather [John James Culpepper] kept it, long as he lived.... Uncle Frank Culpepper [Francis Marion Culpepper] got it soon as my Grandfather died. I don't know who got it when Uncle Frank died.... Great Grandpa Jeff... got a war pension of $15.00 per mo. from Gov. [the State of Alabama].

Biography* Census: 1880 Wesobulga Beat 4, Clay Co., AL. \ED 34-1 (Lurana 45 GA in hh of R. J. Culpepper).\
Although the obituary clearly gives her date of birth and death and calculates her age at death, marriage and census records indicate that she was probably born before 1834, probably in 1832. If Louraney had been born in 1834, she would have been 14 years old when she married, not impossible for the times, but unlikely since no parent gave permission for the marriage based on the marriage record. Also, two years later, in the 1850 census, Louraney was listed as being 18 years old which would suggest a birth year of 1832. In the 1860 census, she age was listed as being 27 years of age, which, depending on when the census was taken, could still support an 1832 date of birth or an 1833 date of birth. In the 1870 census, her age was given as 39, which would suggest an 1830 or 1831 year of birth. Finally, in the 1880 census, Louraney's age was given as 45. This would suggest a date of birth of 1834 or 1835. Louraney was probably born in 1832.
Although Louraney had been born in Georgia, by 1848 she had moved, presumably with her parents, to Chambers Co., AL since this is where she married. She is found in the 1850 census of Chambers Co., AL with her husband. By 1860, Robert Jefferson and Louraney had moved their family to Randolph Co., AL where they remained until after the 1870 census. By the 1880 census the family had moved on to Clay Co., AL where "Lurana" was recorded with her husband, R. J. Culpepper, and younger children in Wesobulga Beat 4. According to Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, Louraney and Robert Jefferson moved with their son, John James Culpepper, to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL. Some of the extended family settled across the county line in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. Since the 1890 U. S. census burned we do not know exactly where everyone was situated at this point but according to her obituary, Louraney died in 1894 while living with or visiting children and grandchildren who were living in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. The following obituary preserved by great-granddaughter, Mrs. J. E. (Ann White) Hicks, is from an unknown source: CULPEPPER -- Miss Louraney Cardwell was born June the 8th 1834 [1832? based on presumed age at marriage and census records] and was married to R. J. Culpepper Dec. the 19th 1848, and died at her home, near Joppa, Cullman County, Ala. Jan. the 2nd 1894, aged 59 [61?] years, 6 months and 25 days. Mrs. Culpepper joined the Methodist Church South in 1872, and from that time on, she lived an humble, christian life. She dearly loved her church, and was untiring in her efforts to promote the cause of Christ. Mrs. Culpepper was the mother of eleven children, two have preceded her to the Heavenly Land, while nine are left to mourn their loss, but their loss is her eternal gain, for she has gone where sorrow, pain, sickness and death are felt and feared no more. Her life was an exemplary one, she was a loving wife, a kind and gentle mother. She will be sadly missed at home, at church and in the nieghborhood, she was loved by all who knew her. The writer has known her for several years and to know her was to love her. We tender our heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved family. A. S. A. Meaders
Only ten of the eleven of the eleven children have been accounted for. Possibly one child died at birth or died young and between census years. Finally, Louraney's daughter, "Plyna Smith" (Mrs. L. W. (Pauline Culpepper) Smith), was listed in an article about a 1935 John James Culpepper family reunion with "aunt Fanny Busby" (Mrs. H. B. (Nancy Ann Frances Elizabeth Alice Culpepper) Busby) of Albertville. This was a daughter of William Washington and Ferby (Cardwell) Culpepper.

A son, Louis Alford Culpepper, wrote to his grandson, R. A. Morgan 11 Oct 1942, that "My father William Washington Culpepper was born near Fredonia [Chambers Co.], Alabama." Unfortunately, in census records, William Washington listed his own place of birth as Georgia although his parents probably moved to Alabama when William Washington Culpepper was still an infant. William Washington's father, John Jefferson Culpepper, was recorded with his family in the 1830 census of Upson Co., GA and he was still in Upson County when he drew a lot in the 1832 Gold Lottery of Georgia and this is probably where William Washington was born. However, at some point after William's birth, possibly in 1835 or 1836 when John Jefferson Culpepper's brothers, Francis G. and James Culpepper, moved their families or in 1837 when, William's older brother, John J. Culpepper, married, William's father moved his family to Chambers Co., AL. This is where William was noted as one of two males age 5 to 10 in the household of John J. Culpepper in the 1840 census.
William emerges in census records living with his parents in the 1850 census of Chambers Co., AL. His sister, Elizabeth, and brother, Robert, were living next door. Shortly after this, William married in Chambers Co, AL. Apparently, however, his first wife died because in Dec 1855, William married a second time to the younger sister of his brother, Robert's, wife. William's father was the second bondsman. However, shortly after this, William and his second wife and his son by his first marriage moved to Randolph Co., AL where the first child of William's second marriage was born in 1857. William W. Culpepper was recorded in the Almond P. O. district near Louina (now Wadley) in the 1860 census of Randolph Co., AL. William's son by his first marriage, John, was recorded living next door with William's parents.
When the Civil War began, William Washington Culpepper enlisted in the Confederate Army.      After the war, William Washington Culpepper appears to have returned to the same land where he was living in 1860 and he was noted in the 1870 census of Louina P. O. district (now Wadley), Randolph Co., AL with his second wife and their children. William's son, John, was still living next door with William's father, John Jefferson Culpepper. William's brother, Robert, was his other neighbor. According to p. 112 of Historical Records of Randolph County, Alabama 1832-1900 compiled by Marilyn Davis Barefield from the 12 Feb 1875 edition of the Randolph Enterprise "W. W. Culpepper" of Beat 8, Township 21, Range 10 was to have his land sold to the highest bidder on 1 Mar 1875 to pay his taxes. This land appears to have been north of the land where William was noted in census records. And William remained in Randolph Co., AL after this since he was recorded there with his wife and younger children. In 1950, a granddaughter of William Washington Culpepper, Mrs. M. A. (Inez Culpepper) Champion, is known to have sold land south of Wadley, Randolph Co., AL which is known to have been granted to or purchased by "William Culpepper" in 1850 but this is presumed to have been William Henry Culpepper since William Washington Culpepper would have been too young. But it is not known if this was the land that William Washington was living on when he left for Marshall Co., AL.
According a 1916 Guntersville Advertiser article, in 1890, William and his wife moved to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL near where William's brother, Robert, had already settled. Although the article indicates that William and Ferby remained there the rest of their lives, they are not found there in the 1900 census and were apparently off visiting their son, Louis Alford Culpepper, in Bell Co., TX when the census was taken. By 1910, William and Ferby were back in Alabama where they were noted in Marshall Co., AL census records.
The following is from the 10 Oct 1916 issue of the Guntersville Advertiser published in Guntersville, Marshall Co., AL: Uncle William, who is 83 years of age, has lived on Sand mountain for 26 years, having moved there from Randolph county in 1890. During his residence in this county he has lived continuously on one farm on Slab creek near the Mt. Vernon settlement. Uncle William has been a Mason for over 50 years, having joined that order before the civil war. He enjoys good health with the exception of a nervous trouble which impedes his speech. Uncle William probably owns the oldest mule in the county. He has a mule that is 39 years old and he has owned it all its life.

Burial*circa 20 November 1911 Her body was interred circa 20 November 1911 at Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Albertville, Marshall Co., Alabama.1
Biography* The name was given as "Feraba" "Feriba" and "Ferriba" in census records; as "Pheraby" in the marriage record, and "Jerba" in the death record. Louis Alford Culpepper gave his mother's name as "Ferby." The name is a corruption of "Phoebe." Ferby's relationship to Louraney Cardwell, wife of Robert J. Culpepper is unknown. Although census records indicate that she was born in Georgia, by 1855, Ferby had moved, presumably with her parents, to Chambers Co., AL where she married, William Washington Culpepper. Shortly after this, Ferby moved with her husband to Randolph Co., AL where she was noted in 1860, 1870 and 1880 census records. In 1890, Ferby and her husband followed Robert Jefferson and Louraney (Cardwell) Culpepper to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL settling on a farm on Slab Creek near the Mt. Vernon settlement. In a 26 Jul 1979 letter, Mary Lillian Butler Pierce wrote that "Uncle Bill and Aunt Fereby Culpepper only lived about 2 1/2 miles from grandpa and grandma Culpepper [John James Culpepper and Nancy Jane Willoughby]." Although Sand Mountain remained their home base for the remainder of their lives, apparently Ferby and her husband took time to visit their children since a 74 year old "Feaby" was listed with her husband in the 1900 census of Bell Co., TX living with their son, Louis Alford Culpepper. In fact Ferby would have been 65 or 66 years old depending on when the census was taken. A 75 year old "Phereby" was recorded with her husband in the 1910 census of Marshall Co., AL, and this is where she died and was buried in 1911.

(Fortunate Drawer) Land Lottery1832 She had a fortunate draw in the land lottery in 1832 at Talbot Co., Georgia,
lot 975/19/3 in what became Paulding Co., GA.3
Married Name2 December 1836  As of 2 December 1836, her married name was Cooper.
Marriage*2 December 1836 She married David George Cooper Jr. at Upson Co., Georgia, on 2 December 1836 at age 16.4
(Household member) 1850 Census1 June 1850 John, Emma, Mary, Thomas, Daniel, Nancy and Mary listed as a household member living with David George Cooper Jr. on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Talbot Co., Georgia.5

Death*23 November 1886 She died at Colquitt Co., Georgia, on 23 November 1886 at age 66.
Burial*circa 24 November 1886 Her body was interred circa 24 November 1886 at Wesley Chapel Methodist Cemetery, near, Berlin, Colquitt Co., Georgia.6
Biography* Census: 1880 Colquitt Co., GA. \GMD 1020 14-21 (Nancy C. 60 SC SC SC in hh of David Cooper).\
In the 1850 census, Nancy Caroline was listed as "Caroline." in the 1870 and 1880 census records she was listed as "Nancy" or "Nancy C." She was listed as "Nancy C. Cooper" on her tombstone. She was probably named Nancy after her grandmother, Nancy Culpepper, and she might have been named Caroline for her place of birth. She was noted as a female 0-10 years of age with her parents in the 1820 census of Edgefield District, SC. In "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written 8 Oct 1942 by Rev. George Bright Culpepper, he noted that "Caroline" was five years old when her father died and that "she married a man named Cooper, who moved to Colquitt County, Georgia about the year 1857." In the 1830 census of Monroe Co., GA, although Nancy Caroline was not yet married, she was not listed in the household of her widowed mother, Mary. Perhaps she was overlooked by the census taker or perhaps she was visiting relatives at the time of the census. By 1850 census, Nancy Caroline's mother was recorded living with her now married daughter in the household of David G. Cooper in Talbot Co., GA census records. The Cooper family apparently moved on to Colquitt Co., GA and was noted there in census records in 1870 and 1880.

Biography*28 July 1894 Golden Wedding Anniversary
Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Culpepper celebrated their golden wedding at their home one mile south of town on Saturday the 28th inst., with a most excellent dinner. There were present besides the immediate family and a few special friends, Rev. J.B. Culpepper and family and Mr. Lafayette Culpepper and daughter, of Macon. The doctor is now about 76 years of age and for 50 years he has walked in love and affection with his companion. The doctor never appeared, considering his age, in better spirits and we hope that he will live many years longer. We return thanks to the doctor for an invitation to attend but on account of sickness were unable to do so.10
Death*11 February 1898 He died at Butler, Taylor Co., Georgia, on 11 February 1898 at age 75.
Biography* According to Rev. John Butler Culpepper, a son, when James Marion Culpepper joined "FREE-MASONARY" in the the Autumn of 1847, he was described as 5 ft. 7 in. tall, weighing 118 lbs, dark complected with blue eyes, the left arm shorter than the right and the right eye slightly smaller than the left.

Rev. John Butler Culpepper also wrote the following account of his father's life: James Marion Culpepper was born February the 1st 1823, in Baldwin County Georgia, in his father's home on the "three mile hill," which afforded a magnificent view of the country for miles, and also a fine view of the capital, located then at Milledgeville.

The star of ill luck must have been shining at the time of his birth, for his whole life was a fight against odds. When a baby a fall from his nurse's arms dislocated his left shoulder which gave him permanently a short arm. His father died before he was three years of age, but not until he had lost the lovely home and handsome property.

John William, the grandfather, offered them a home, which his mother took for a while. They were given to understand that they could live there so long as desired. John William said he would be to his daughter-in-law a father and the children should be the same as his own, only they would not inherit any property, as their father received all that would come to them. He however promised that the three children would be given a good education and enough that they need not want.

After four years in this home, things not being pleasant and being offered a home by her brother, who was a widower, she accepted over the protest of her father-in-law, who told her "if you go, taking the children with you, you nor they can ever come back under my roof. He kept his word.

A year later this brother married again and was unable to keep them longer. Thus at the early age of eight years there was thrown upon James Marion the burden of earning a living for his mother, older sister and a baby brother.

God never made a more resolute boy. He hired out to work when he had to tip-toe to reach a man's plow-handles. This was the beginning of a life of toil for others, which ceased only with age and infirmity. While a mere lad he became noted as a farmer and was the youngest over-seer in Georgia entrusted with large plantations.

He was converted while still a boy, united with the Methodist Episcopal Church that later in the South became the M. E. Church South. He lived a true Christian life in spite of the pains of poverty, the ravages of disease, the shock of misfortunes (for he made and lost three), the dogs of war, destructive moves, change of profession and flight of years.

Early in his married life he read medicine, took medical lectures in Atlanta, Georgia [p. 228 of History of Peach County specifies that he "graduated from the Atlanta Medical School"] and then became a country-practitioner and pursued the "healing art" among a very poor and needy people up to within a few months of his death.

James Marion tended the wounded during the War between the States and in the closing hours of the War he slipped home. He came at night only to be challenged by a voice: "Now you stop right thar Sir." It was the colored man he had left to watch after the family. He was still on guard.

James Marion was eminent for his day, was widely read for his time and opportunities. His strong points were--perpetual industry, fidelity to a promise, love of his church, faithfulness to his vows as a "Master Mason." His weak points were--an over fondness for fine horses, prejudice against Calvinism, homesteaders and bankrupt refugees. To sum up his life one need but to say he was a Christian gentleman of the true Southern type. Died at his home in Butler, Georgia February the 11th 1898. [End]

      J. M. Culpepper was noted as a physician with his wife and six children, in Oglethorpe, Gatlins District, Macon Co., GA in the 1870 census. He had real estate valued as $1,100 and personal property valued at $1,000. James Culpepper was recorded with his wife and son Josephus in the 1880 census of Macon Co., GA. Younger children such as Nancy Caroline and George Bright Culpepper have not been located in this census and a 43 year old "Amacy Culpepper" born in Georgia was listed in the household with three children between the ages of 8 and 16 that have not been identified. Perhaps the younger children of James Marion Culpepper were off visiting relatives while this family visited with their parents.

Obituary in the Butler Herald, Taylor County GA, 15 Feb 1898

Dr. J. M. Culpepper died at his home south of Butler at 10 o'clock on Friday 11th inst. He had been a sufferer from a complication of diseases for a long while and his death therefore was no surprise, but amid all his pain and suffering he was as patient and enduring as mortal man could be. He joined the Methodist church about 15 years ago. He had lived to the ripe old age of seventy-five years and eleven days. For nearly forty years he practiced medicine in Macon and Taylor Counties and was very successful even in the most difficult cases. His practice was extensive and greatly relieved the sufferings of his fellow-man, who reverences his memory and lament his death. He leaves a devoted companion, a large family of children
among them Revs. John Butler and George B. Lafayett and Joseph Culpepper; Mrs H.H. Hill, Mrs H.C. Brewton and Miss Carrie Culpepper, besides many friends who mourn their loss. His remains were interred in the cemetery in Butler at noon on Saturday, the funeral services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. J.T. Ainsworth

Dr. and Mrs. We return thanks to the doctor for an invitation to attend but on account of sickness were unable to do so.8

Biography* Mrs. John (Dorothy Culpepper) Wingfield preserved a 25 page typed manuscript "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written by her grandfather, Rev. George Bright Culpepper, who noted: My father, James Marion Culpepper, married Lucinda Brooks O'Daniel on Sunday morning, July 29, 1844, in Talbot County, Georgia. They rode the same horse to campmeeting that morning, where my mother heard the first Methodist sermon she had ever heard. She was converted under that sermon, on her wedding day. My father was 21 and my mother was 18. The maiden name of my grandmother on my father's side was Coxley [Corley?]; and on my mother's King. The blood of the Pierces on my father's side and the blood of the Gordons and Kings on my mother's side flows in my veins and in the veins of my children and grandchildren. My father and mother became the parents of four sons and four daughters. These and their children and grandchildren will make up the balance of this writing.
The following excerpt is from p. 228 of the History of Peach County: Lucinda Brooks [was] the daughter of Wilson and Rebecca (King) O'Daniel and a cousin of General John B. Gordon. Rebecca was the daughter of Captain Charles King, a member of the Provincial Congress for South Carolina in 1775, and his wife, Charity Pennington. Charity's father was Captain Isaac Pennington of Pennsylvania and Virginia and the son of the emigrant, Edward Pennington (1667-1711). Edward, who founded a family in Pennsylvania, was the grandson of Sir Isaac Pennington, Lord Mayor of London in 1642-1644.
Lucinda was noted with her husband, James Culpepper, in Macon Co., GA in the 1880 census. A widowed "Lucy Culpepper" was recorded with her children, Joe and Carrie, in the 1900 census of Butler, Taylor Co., GA.

Biography* John Francis would only have been a couple of months old when his father died. He was apparently listed with his mother, Mary (Corley) Culpepper, in the 1830 and 1840 census records but in 1850, his mother was living with her daughter Caroline and Caroline's husband, David G. Cooper. John F. Culpepper was not listed in the household and an 1850 census record for him has not been found.
Rev. George Bright Culpepper wrote in "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" a 25 page typed manuscript completed 8 Oct 1942: My uncle, John Francis Culpepper, was twice married but left no children. His wifes were sisters. He died in Cleburn, Texas, after 1900.
John Francis had apparently moved to Texas by 1853, when he was mentioned in a letter written by his grandfather, John Culpepper, as having "gone West." John Francis has not been found on the 1860 [there was a "J. F. Culpper" in Cass Co., TX in 1860] or 1870 census, but served in Company G, Morgan's Regiment, Texas Cavalry, during the Civil War. According to his Confederate pension application, he moved to Cleburne, Johnson County about 1873. He inherited the Culpepper trait of longevity, living to be 91 years of age.
The following is the Confederate Pension Application of J.F. Culpepper, Comptroller's File No. [B] 2298 approved 4 Oct 1899 by Wm. J.       Rev. George Bright Culpepper in "ONE FAMILY - CULPEPPER" written 8 Oct 1942 noted: My uncle, John Francis Culpepper, was twice married but left no children. His wives were sisters. He died in Cleburn[e, Johnson Co.], Texas, after 1900.
John F. Culpepper was listed in the 1900 census of Johnson Co., TX. His adopted son, Luther Lockett, (Nov 1883 TX) was living with him. In the 1910 census of Johnson, Co., TX, Luther L. Culpepper, was listed as the head-of-household and John F. Culpepper was noted living with his adopted son. Betty Lee Collins Hale copied the following obituary from Cleburne Daily Enterprise for Thursday, 28 Dec 1916: John F. Culpepper Dies Here Yesterday The death of John F. Culpepper, a beloved and aged Johnson County pioneer occured at Price's Chapel yesterday morning at 11:45 o'clock. The funeral was held this afternonn at 2 o'clock Rev. Mr. Nelms conducting the service at Price's Chapel. "Uncle Johnnie," as he was lovingly called by his numerous friends, is not survived by any children of his own, but by Luther Lockett, an adopted son whom he greatly beloved and to whom this loss will be a very sad one. The Enterprise extends sympathy to the bereaved son, to whom the aged pioneer, who had reached his 91st birthday represented one of his dearest earthly ties.
The Cleburne Morning Review for Thursday 28 Dec 1916 provided the same information adding that John Francis Culpepper had lived in the community for 40 years and that "Mrs. Culpepper" had died 25 years ago.
Betty Lee Collins Hale obtained Death Certificate #28415 which gave the cause of death as "Cerysipelas of left arm - duration: 8 days."

Biography* "George W. Culpepper" apparently originally joined Company F of the 3rd Battalion of the Georgia Infantry with his younger brother, Nathan F. Culpepper. According to a record in Nathan's file, there appears to have been a problem with a leave that they took and they are both next found serving in Company B of the 37th GA Infantry. There is also a record for a "William Culpepper" serving in the same Company. Could this be another record for George W. Culpepper? The following is a record of George W. Nathan F. Culpepper

M, (circa 1839 - 7 December 1864)
FatherJames I. J. Culpepper (3 Jun 1806 - 15 Oct 1846)
MotherMartha Byne Blackstone (28 Sep 1814 - 23 Dec 1899)
Extinct Surname?* The family branch headed by Nathan F. Culpepper is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth*circa 1839 Nathan was born at Chambers Co., Alabama, circa 1839.
(Household member) 1850 Census23 October 1850 George, John, Nathan, Martha and Virginia listed as a household member living with Martha Byne Blackstone on the 1850 Census on 23 October 1850 at Coosa District, Coosa Co., Alabama.1
Marriage*21 April 1858 He married Sarah Tabitha Herren at Harris Co., Georgia, on 21 April 1858.2
1860 Census*1 June 1860 Nathan was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at Harris Co., Georgia.3
Civil War*between 1862 and 1864  An unknown person served in the military between 1862 and 1864, and was a in Private in Co B, 37th Georgia Infantry.
Employment* Nathan's occupation: factory operator.
Death*7 December 1864 He died at Franklin, Williamson Co., Tennessee, on 7 December 1864.
Biography* The 1860 census of Harris Co., GA appears to show Martha (Blackstone) Culpepper and three of her sons clustered together. Unfortunately, what appear to be errors by the census taker make it difficult to sort out. The head of household for family 627 (1186 Dist, P.O. Mountain Hill, p. 90) is shown as a 22 year old male, born in Georgia, who is an "operator in factory" with $50 in personal property. Unfortunately, the name of the "male" is Martin Culpepper. The other members of the household are Tabitha Culpepper--an 18 year female born in Georgia, and a 4 month old infant girl. This would suggest that it was the household of Nathan F. Culpepper and his wife, Sarah Tabitha Herren. Possibly Nathan and his wife were living in the house of Martha (Blackstone) Culpepper who was recorded living next door in the house of his brother, John Culpepper.
Nathan F. Culpepper enlisted with Lt. Blanchard as a Private, Company F, 3 Batt'n Georgia Infantry on March 20 1862 at Columbus, Ga for the period of the War. On May 3rd 1863, Nathan and his brother George W. Culpepper received a pass to be absent and when they hadn't returned by 4:00 p.m. the next day, Nathan's commanding officer wrote to Headquarters that they were missing: ____________________Hd Qtrs Co F 3rd Ga Batt Near Shelbyville Tenn ______________________________________________May 4th 1863 Brig Genl W. B. Bates _____2nd Brigade _____McCow__ Division _________________________Genl ______________________________ On yesterday Privates George and Nathan Culpepper received a pass to be absent until four oclock and have not yet returned the presumption is that they have deserted as they sold their Knapsacks before leaving and taken all of their clothes with them they did not take their arms or ammunition. Below find descriptive list of each also their place of residence ______________________________I am very Respt ______________________________Jesse J. Bradford Capt ___________________________________Co "F" 3rd Ga Batt
Nathan was described as 24 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with light hair and blue eyes. He was born in Chambers Co., AL and was a farmer who enlisted March 20, 1862 with Lt. Blanchard for the period of the war. Post Office for his place of residence was Mulberry Grove, Harris Co., GA. This situation was apparently resolved but the remaining service records for Nathan and George show them in Co "B" of the 37th Regiment of the Georgia Infantry. According to the Civil War pension application of his widow, Sarah, the couple married 10 Apr 1857. However, according to Harris Co., GA records, they applied for a license 21 Apr 1858 but there is no record of the actual marriage. Also there appear to be two dates for Nathan's death. He was supposed to have been killed 30 Nov 1864 in the Battle of Franklin, TN but another record shows that he was actually wounded at the Battle of Franklin and died 7 Dec 1864.

The enumerator recorded 3 Females 0-5 and no Male children. We believe this was an error and should have been recorded as 3 Males 0-5..1
(free wh male 10-15) 1840 Census1 June 1840 William, John and Daniel was probably a free white male, age 10 and under 15, in Francis Gillespie Culpepper's household, on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 at Chambers Co., Alabama.2

Probate*4 March 1901 Probate action was taken on Daniel's estate on 4 March 1901 at Medina Co., Texas
Biography* Daniel's birth was recorded in the "BIBLE FAMILY RECORD OF FRANCIS G. & EGLINTINE CULPEPPER": ___Daniel F. Culpepper__ Born december 5 1825
Francis G. Culpepper's older brother, Daniel Peek Culpepper, had died 25 Oct 1825, only a couple of months before Daniel F. Culpepper was born. Presumably Daniel was named for his uncle. Since Daniel's parents married in Monroe Co., GA in Jan 1825, this is believed to have been Daniel's place of birth. No confirmation has been found for Daniel's middle name. A grandchild was named "Daniel Fey Burgin" and it has been suggested that "Fey" was Daniel's middle name. However, Mrs. C. M. (Pat Burgin) Lee wrote 2 Nov 1994 letter that according to Daniel Fey Burgin's sister, Marie, "her brother, Fey, was named after a photographer friend of the family." Obviously the photographer wasn't around in 1825 when Daniel F. Culpepper was born.
Daniel's father, Francis G. Culpepper, has not been found in Georgia land records and so it is not known at what point Daniel's parents moved the family to Talbot Co., GA where they are found in 1830 census records. In Daniel's first appearance in census records he was unfortunately listed as one of three females 0-10 years of age in the household of Francis G. Culpepper. A microfilm copy of the census record was double checked and the head of household was clearly listed as "Francis G Culpepper" and his three young sons were definitely listed in the female column. Daniel's father moved his family to Chambers Co., AL in 1834 The family was still in Chambers Co., AL in 1840 when Daniel and his two younger brothers were correctly noted in census records as 3 males 10-15 years of age in the household of Francis Culpepper. The family moved to Mississippi in 1846. No marriage record has been found for Daniel in Chambers Co., AL and it is assumed that he moved to Mississippi with his parents.
Daniel was not listed with his parents in the 1850 Lafayette Co., MS census. It is not known at what point Daniel moved to Texas. Mrs. C. M. (Pat Burgin) Lee wrote 2 Nov 1994 that "according to the Culpepper Heritage Society history, Daniel & Thomas in 1848 went to Texas before the rest of the family." They have not been found in 1850 Texas census records. There was a 23 year old "Daniel Culpepper" born in South Carolina that was listed (p. 368) as a farmer in the Marshall Co., MS census in the household of Mary K. Hardin. A 22 "Thos. J. Culpepper" was also listed nearby (p. 369) in Marshall Co., MS in the household of Robert I. Greer. Thomas was also listed as having been born in South Carolina. Since Marshall Co., MS shares a border with Lafayette Co., MS and the two were apparently living on nearby farms, it seems likely that these were Francis G. Culpepper's oldest sons out on their own before setting out to Texas. Daniel was listed with a Georgia place of birth in the 1860 and 1900 census records of Lavaca Co., TX and with an Alabama place of birth in the 1870 Lavaca Co., TX census. Since Francis G. Culpepper moved his family to Texas in 1851, presumably both Daniel and Thomas would have been in Texas by then. In 1853, Daniel's grandfather, John Culpepper, wrote to Francis G. Culpepper, "I thought Daniel was gone." It is not clear what this refers to, perhaps Daniel had contemplated moving on from Lavaca Co., TX and then changed his mind.
Daniel is next noted in the marriage records of Lavaca Co., TX in 1855 and at this point he apparently settled down to stay. Daniel continued to live in Lavaca County, Texas until after the 1900 census when he moved to Devine in Medina County, Texas where he died. In the 1860 Hallettsville, Lavaca Co., TX census, Daniel Culpeper and his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Martha were listed twice. In records of family #245, living next door to his father, Francis, Daniel was listed with real estate valued at $1,200 and personal property valued at $1,000. In the listing for family #644, Daniel was listed as having $600 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property. Possibly Daniel owned both pieces of land and the census taker, possibly getting information from neighbors, didn't realize that the family was being recorded twice. Or, since census takers were paid by the head, perhaps some creative record keeping was done.
Daniel served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. On p. 54 of On The Headwaters of the Lavaca and the Navidad, Paul C. Boethel listed "D. F. Culpepper, private" on the: Muster roll of Frederick J. Malone's Company, organized at Sweet Home, August 6, 1861. Enlistment for state service for twelve months. Note on roll: "No arms of an improved style."
Daniel's brother, J. T. J. Culpepper, was listed as a "1st sergeant" on the same roster. On p. 55, Judge Boethel noted: As military units for service in the Confederate army were recruited, the personnel of Searcy's and Malone's companies were sorely depleted and eventually the units were disbanded to be superceded by other state service units. On January 25, 1863, the Lavaca County unit, [was] designated as Company C, 24th Regiment, Texas State Troops....
"D. F. Culpepper, Private" age 37, born Georgia, with a "Sweet Home" TX post office was listed in this reorganized company.
Daniel's first wife apparently died just before or during the Civil War and his daughters appear to have been taken in by his parents. After the war, Daniel F. Culpepper was listed with his daughters, Mattie and Mary A., in his father's household in the 1870 census of Lavaca Co., TX. He was listed as a stock raiser. Daniel Culpepper was listed as a farmer with his second wife, "Zilpha," and a young family in the 1880 census of Lavaca Co., TX. Also listed in the household was "Joseph Holloway" an 18 year old step-son born in Alabama. Presumably this was the son of Zilpha by her first marriage. Joseph listed his father as having been born in Georgia and his mother in Alabama. Also listed was an unidentified 21 year old "Gibson Grant" who was recorded as having been born at "sea." Daniel Culpepper remained in Lavaca Co., TX and was noted as a farmer in the 1900 Lavaca Co., TX census. He had been married 27 years to his second wife "Zelphia." Daughters "Sinthia" and "Winnie" were noted living with them. John H. Henderson born Jun 1848 in Maryland was also listed in the household and has not been identified. Mrs. Travis (Jacqueline Lorenz) McClinton located the following Lavaca Co., TX deed (Book 40 p. 574-575), in which (D. F. Culpepper deeded land to the children of his brother, J. T. J. Biography* From Mt. Olive Cemetery, Lavaca Co., TX: _________________________Mary Ann Culpepper _________________________1839 - 1861
It has been difficult to establish how many children of Mary Ann had before her death. Unfortunately the census records can not be relied on to sort out the problem. Two girls can be establised as probable children of Mary Ann based on census records. Martha was listed with her parents in the 1860 census and Mary Ann was listed with Martha and her father in the 1870 census living in the Francis G. Culpepper household. Culpepper Heritage Association records (based on records collected by Dr. Charles L. Culpepper, Sr.) list two additional children of Daniel during the time period when Mary Ann would have been alive: William R. Culpepper (19 Sep 1856-1857) and James M. Culpepper (11 May 1859-1861). According to p. 52 of Lavaca Co., TX - Cemetery Records Vol. I by Sammy Tise, the following graves are found together in the Mt. Olive Cemetery: CULPEPPER, W. R.________1857_____1867 CULPEPPER, J. N.________1860_____1861_____Could be 1867 CULPEPPER, Mary Ann_____1839_____1861 CULPEPPER, A.___________1861_____1864 CULPEPPER, Maggie_______1875_____1878
Mary Ann Culpepper was Mary Ann Guthrie, Daniel F. Culpepper's first wife and Maggie was Daniel F. Culpepper's daughter by his second wife. The close proximity of the other three graves to Mary Ann's and the dates of the children's births would suggest that they were in fact her children. Since full dates were not given on the tombstones, it is possible that the stones were placed later and dates were based on memory and it appears that the stones have weathered and some of the dates are difficult to read. However, based on the Culpepper Heritage Association records, the infant James M. Culpepper should have shown up in the Daniel F. Culpepper household in the 1860 census. As noted, although the family was listed twice in the 1860 census, James was not listed. But the fact that the family was listed TWICE suggests that the census record is flawed. Could the three graves have been for children of another Culpepper brother? Vashti (Harbour) Culpepper, the wife of Daniel's brother, William R. Culpepper, is believed to have died by Nov 1856 since she was not mentioned in the estate papers of her father. But if she was the mother of W. R. Culpepper it would seem natural that her child would have been found near her and she has not been found in this cemetery. Also, if Daniel's brother, William R. Culpepper, was the father of the child then the name on the tombstone should have indicated that this was the grave of W. R. Culpepper, JR. Since William did not remarry until 1861, He was presumably not the father of the other children. Daniel's brother, James L. Culpepper, did not marry until Dec 1856 and so presumably was not the father of W. R. Culpepper. James' first wife had apparently died by 1860 since he remarried Jan 1860. If James M. Culpepper was a child of James L. Culpepper it seems likely that the child would have been buried near his mother and Eliza Jane (Harbour) Culpepper's grave has not been found in the Mt. Olive Cemetery. Also James and his second wife, Margaret, were noted in the 1860 census and no children were listed in the household. Descendants have preserved the birth records of the children of James and Margaret and "A. Culpepper" was not listed as one of their children. This brings us back to the graves of the three children by Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper. Although there is no positive evidence that they were Mary Ann's children the dates of birth and the proximity of the graves suggest that they were.
Since Mary Ann (Guthrie) Culpepper's youngest child, Mary Ann, was not supposed to have been born until March of 1862, either the death date of the mother or the date of the birth of the child is in error. Since the stones appear to have been added at at later date and based on memory, the birth date of her youngest child is probably a more reliable indicator of when Mary Ann may have died.
