  • The town of Greenville, Greene County, New York was established in 1803 from the towns of Coxsackie and Durham. It was briefly known as "Freehold" and the name Greenville became fixed in 1808. The town of Cairo was also formed in 1803 from parts of Coxsackie, Durham and Catskill.
  • He appeared on the census in 1810 at Greenville, Greene Co., New York, Wm. Drake, with a household of 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 26-44. Enumerated on the same census sheet is John Drake.10

  • William Drake is said to be a son of Joseph Drake by Lillian Drake Avery (1926). There is no evidence that supports this claim.12
  • William Drake, a native of Dutchess County, N. Y. married Eunice Holmes, and removed to Greene County where they both died. Their children were Jessamine, John, Polly, Susan, Catherine, Samuel, Claudius, Ransom, James, and Joseph.4
  • Louis S. Drake, in Jesayas Jansze Drake of New Netherlands, 1648-after 1720? (1967), a descendant of William Drake and Eunice Holmes (sic) states that William is a descendant of John Drake (of Jamaica, L.I. and Goshen, N.Y.) and his wife Magdalena Brouwer (which in itself is incorrect) and John Drake's parents, Josias Drats and Aeltje Brouwer. However, no evidence has been found to support a descent for this William Drake from Josias Drats through any line. It is possible that William is descended from Josias Drats, but it is also possible that he descends from the Drake families that originated in Eastchester, New York.
At this time, William Drake's ancestry is not known.2

Biley Dudley1

M, b. 1790, d. 1861
  • Biley Dudley was born in 1790.3,4,5
  • He married Hannah Parsons at Windham, Windham Co., Vermont, on 20 February 1814 (they had six children, all born in Windham, Vermont).4
  • Biley Dudley died in 1861 at Constable, Franklin Co., New York.4
  • He was buried at Irish Street Cemetery, Constable, Franklin Co., New York; "...their grandson, Harvey Dudley, had their bones removed to the lot of his father (James S. Dudley) and mother and a new tombstone erected in 1935."4,5
  • Probable son of John Dudley. An oral history of the family passed down through generations states that James Smith Dudley stated that his grandfather was named John Dudley.6
  • He appeared on the census in 1820 at Windham, Windham Co., Vermont, as "Billey" Dudley, with a family of 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26.7
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Windham, Windham Co., Vermont, as Billey Dudley with a family of 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 30-40.3
  • "In 1832 they emigrated to Northern New York with all their possessions in an ox cart. At that time the ages of their six children ranged from sixteen to two. They lived for a few years in Brandon and Bangor and then moved to Constable, where they spent the remainder of their lives."4
  • He appeared on the census in 1840 at Constable, Franklin Co., New York, as Billey Dudley with a family of 2 males age 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50.8
  • Biley Dudley has not been found as named, in a search of the 1850 U.S. census in Constable, New York. There is, however, a James Dudley, age given as 55, birth place given as New York, a farmer. With this James Dudley are his wife, Hannah, age given as 50, birth place as New York; a son James, age given as 22, birth place as New York; and a son Horace, age given as 18, birth place as New York. Biley was the only known Dudley to have emmigrated to Constable, New York, and is the only Dudley head of household to appear there in the 1840 census. The 1860 census includes Biley and two of his sons, Jackson and James, as heads of households. It is quite possible, despite the slight descrepincies in age and place of birth, that this census entry is a record of Biley Dudley's family at the time of the census, 20 Sep 1850.9
  • He appeared on the census on 9 July 1860 at Constable, Franklin Co., New York, as "Bilia Dudley" age 70, a farmer. His wife is called Auty, she is age 69, and they are enumerated in the household of Harvey Hastings and his wife, Lucy. Enumerated on the same page is the family of Jackson Dudley.10

Family: Hannah Parsons b. 1794, d. 1872

Biley Dudley, who spelled his name Biley instead of Byley, the son of John Dudley, was born in 1790. He was married to Hannah Parsons (born 1794) on Feb. 20, 1814 in Windham, Vt. They had six children, all born in Windham. The original records of the marriage and births of the children are on file in the Town Clerk's Office in that town. In 1832 they emigrated to Northern New York with all their possessions in an ox cart. At that time the ages of their six children ranged from sixteen to two. They lived for a few years in Brandon and Bangor and then moved to Constable, where they spent the remainder of their lives. He died in 1861 and she in 1872. They were buried in the Protestant cemetery in Constable. Their graves were in an undesirable part of the cemetery and the slab tombstone was broken and in poor condition.
