PLYMOUTH - Shirley F. Colby, 83, died Monday, April 6, 2009, after a period of declining health.

She was born June 30, 1925, in Concord, the daughter of J. Langdon Prescott and Myra F. (Flanders) Prescott. She attended Concord schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1943.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold R. Colby, to whom she was married for 51 years, in 2001.

Prior to retirement, Mrs. Colby was the office manager of her husband's business for 20 years and was involved in school and community service organizations, such as Girl Scouts and PTA, while her daughters were growing up. She fondly remembers being a crossing guard at Dewey School and wearing the Concord Police Department uniform.

She was past noble grand of Colfax Rebekah Lodge of Franklin and Fidelity Rebekah Lodge 14 of Concord, and past district deputy president of the Rebekah Assembly. She was a Rebekah for more than 50 years and was recognized in 2008 for her years of service by Enterprise Rebekah Lodge 46 of Bristol, which she joined in 2005. She also belonged to Cardigan Lodge 38, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Mrs. Colby enjoyed decorative painting and participated in craft fairs in Maine and New Hampshire. She was always busy recycling wood, glass, slate and furniture pieces into one-of-a-kind hand-painted items. Bowling was her passion and for many years she was a member of the Concord Senior Bowling League. She also loved to read, knit and crochet.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Ladies Guild in Concord. Mrs. Colby enjoyed spending summers in York Beach, Maine, and traveling with her husband in their recreational vehicle.

For 80 years, Mrs. Colby lived in Concord, and in 2005, she moved to Plymouth to live with her daughter, Nancy C. Aldrich. In Plymouth, she became active at the Plymouth Regional Senior Center, taught a craft class and volunteered in the dining room.

The family includes three daughters, Sarah A. Colby of Concord, Nancy C. Aldrich of Plymouth, and Shirley "Jean" Colby of Concord; brother Edwin H. Prescott of Tucson, Ariz.; and stepdaughter Linda B. Kersting of Mt. Prospect, Ill. Her grandchildren include Matthew Aldrich, Emmi-Rose Martin, Andrea Bowne and Laura Aldrich of New Hampshire, and Teri van Bolderen, Kathy Mikes, Susan Busse, Ted Kersting and Patrick Kersting of Illinois and Ohio. She will be missed by her great-grandchildren Alexander, Jackson, William, and Olivia, and 15 great-grandchildren in Illinois and Ohio.

Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. in the chapel at Bennett Funeral Home, 3 Church St., Concord, with a Rebekah Service at 7:30 p.m. by Enterprise Rebekah Lodge 46 of Bristol.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 177 N. Main St., Concord, with the Rev. David B. Keller officiating.
