Orrin Tether Colby
Beloved Husband and Father

Orrin Tether Colby was born May 16, 1914, in Sigurd, Utah, to John Henry and Bertha Maria Lazenby Colby. He passed away October 2, 2008, the last of his parents' children. His father died when he was not quite 8-years-old, so he grew up working hard. He had absolute love and respect for his mother.

He was a perfect example of patience, integrity, honor, and respect. He took great pride in his family and loved each of his children and grandchildren for their own individual traits and abilities.

Orrin fell in love at first sight upon meeting Maurine Winget. They were married in the Manti Temple November 15, 1937. She preceded him in death on May 4, 2008.

He was totally devoted to his family, especially to his sweetheart, Maurine, to whom he was always kind. He has often said, "I sure love that woman."

Orrin had an unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, as demonstrated in every aspect of his life and through his dedication and service. His formal Church service began as a Scoutmaster when he was 17 (just a little older than the boys in his troop). He has served in many capacities, including two bishoprics, ward clerk in at least two wards, Sunday School superintendent, on the high council of Pioneer Stake, and as high priest group leader for many years. He was a temple ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple for 14 years. He loved and honored his country and served in the Utah National Guard.

He was happiest when out in nature, as shown through his love of farming, fishing, and oil painting.

Orrin could do anything. He worked at the Bingham Copper Mine during the War years, then bought some property in Manti where he farmed and worked for Manti City Power. He was finally able to purchase the ranch on Lost Creek, east of Sigurd. The ranch was his lifelong dream of paradise. In 1958, he had to sell the ranch and went to work for Garkane Power in Hatch, Utah, then for Utah Power & Light in 1959 in Moab. He was transferred to various locations in the state, ending up in Salt Lake City where he retired as a Journeyman Lineman in 1979.

He is survived by his five children, Orrin Tether, Jr. and JoAnn Colby of Salt Lake City; Lorraine and Ronald Barton of St. George; Linda and Clyde L. (Lee) Hone, Jr. of Riverton; Evelyn and Steve Baugh of Pleasant Grove; and Stanley and Charlotte Colby of American Fork; 30 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Henry J and Boyd; and sisters, Matilda Green, Selda Hatch, and Melba Colby.

Funeral services will be held at the Poplar Grove Ward, 1401 W. 700 S., Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sat., Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. Viewings will be one hour before the services at the ward and on Fri. evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 S. Redwood Rd. Interment also at Redwood Memorial Estates.

We are so grateful to the staff at Brighton Gardens and Hospice for Utah for their great kindness and capable care. We are also extremely appreciative of the loving service and friendship of the members of the Poplar Grove Ward.

Oscar P. COLBY, who is re-nominated for Justice of Sessions, was born in Ogden April 26, 18-- (1841?). His grandfather came to Ogden in 1803, he and one brother being the first settlers of that town. Mr. Colby was educated in the common schools of the town and also attended Satterlee of Dexter's Collegiate Institute in this city in 1857 and 1858. From that school he went to the Brockport Collegiate Institute where he remained until the spring of 1862. Then he enlisted in Company A, 140th Regiment and went to the front with that gallant band of soldiers. Private Colby was wounded at Little Round Top at Gettysburg, where Col. O' RORKE met his death. Since the war Mr. Colby has resided in Ogden. During the administration of Sheriff SCHOEFFEL from 1882 to 1885 he served as a deputy. For three years past he has acted as a justice of the peace in his town, and during 1890 he served as a member of the Democratic County Committee. Mr. Colby has made many warm friends in this city during his term as Justice of Sessions, who will warmly congratulate him on his re-nomination.

History of Rochester and Monroe County New York From the Earliest Historic Times to the Beginning of 1907" by William F. PECK, The Pioneer Publishing Company, New York and Chicago, 1908.

Oscar P. COLBY, in former years connected with agricultural interests, his attention, however, being now given to the discharge of the official duties which devolve upon him as justice of the peace and clerk of the village board in Spencerport, was here born on the 26th of April, 1841, his birthplace being the farm which was settled by his grandfather, Abraham COLBY, in 1802. Here the grandson has spent his entire life with the exception of three years when he was a soldier of the Union army in the Civil war. His parents were James and Martha W. (PECK) COLBY. The father was also born at the old COLBY homestead, where he spent his entire life, passing away at the age of eighty-five years. He followed the occupation of farming and thus provided for the support of his family. His wife was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, and became a resident of East Bloomfield, Ontario county, New York, where she was residing at the time of her marriage. She had previously engaged in teaching in the town of Ogden. Unto Mr. and Mrs. James COLBY were born two children, the elder being Adelaide, who became the wife of James C. ROSS and died about 1905.

Oscar P. COLBY acquired his early education in the public schools and also attended the Rochester Collegiate Institute and what is now the Brockport Normal School. He assisted in the work of the home farm during the periods of vacation and after he had put aside his text-books. On the 8th of August, 1862, he offered his services to the government in defense of the Union, enlisting as a member of Company A, One Hundred and Fortieth New York Volunteer Infantry, under Colonel O'RORKE. The regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and Mr. COLBY participated in the battle of Fredericksburg, where he was under fire for the first time. He afterward took part in all of the engagements that led up to Gettysburg, where on the 2d of July, 1863, he received a ball in the right leg at Little Roundtop. It was at that time that his colonel was killed. Mr. COLBY carried the ball for six weeks before the surgeons could locate it. After he had sufficiently recovered from his injuries he was assigned to detached service at Sickel's general hospital at Alexandria, Virginia, where he remained until the close of the war.

Mr. COLBY was a brave and loyal soldier, never faltering in the performance of any duty, whether it called him to the lonely picket line or to the firing line. Soon after his return home he was married and began farming on the old family homestead, continuing to engage actively in general agricultural pursuits until about fifteen years ago, when he was elected justice of sessions and served for two terms on the bench with Judge William E. WERNER. For fifteen years he has lived in the village of Spencerport and for a similar period he has filled the office of justice of the peace, while at the present writing he is serving as clerk of the village board. In his political affiliation he has been true to the teachings of the COLBY family, who through several generations have been stalwart democrats.

It was in 1865 that Mr. COLBY was united in marriage to Miss Hattie E. ROSS, a native of the town of Ogden, and to them have been born two children: Alexander G., who is now upon the old homestead farm; and Ida V., who is with her parents. Mr. COLBY has sold a part of his farm to his son but still owns about one hundred acres of land which is very valuable and productive. Fraternally he is connected with John H. MARTINDALE post, No. 270, G. A. R., of Spencerport. In 1863 he joined Etolian lodge, No. 479, A. F. & A. M., of Spencerport, being one of its oldest members. He is a worthy representative of a prominent pioneer family, the name of COLBY having ever stood for good citizenship, for progress in business and for fidelity in social life. His record is in harmony with that of an honored ancestry and it is his personal worth which entitles him to mention in this volume.
