Harold Colby Sr.

LEBANON, Maine - Harold P. Colby Sr., 58, of 292 North Rochester Road died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

Born July 9, 1945, in Boise, Idaho, he was the son of Doug and Yvonne (Sharkey) Colby.

He attended Rochester, N.H., public schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge he worked in the construction field until 1981 when he began working for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He was an outside machinist and active union member serving as vice president and president of the Machinist's Union Local 836. After his retirement he drove a school bus for School Administrative District 60 for several years and most recently worked for Robbins Auto Parts.

Because of his love for children, especially his own and his grandchildren, he was dedicated to participating in all their activities. He was a Little League coach and umpire, and a Boy Scout leader for many years in Lebanon. He worked tirelessly to support these groups and shared many memorable moments through the years. He was a very popular bus driver for several years in Lebanon. In recent years he developed a love for miniature horses that he shared with his wife, grandchildren and many good friends. He enjoyed showing them at N bar H and served that club as vice president and as an active member supporting the club.

Harold will be sadly missed by his family and many friends who were fortunate enough to enjoy his kindness, generosity and sense of humor that prevailed throughout his illness. These include his wife of 33 years, Donna (Page) Colby of Lebanon; two sons, Harold P. Colby Jr. and his wife Rachel of Sanford, Timothy Colby and his fiancée Nicole Janzen of Lebanon, and his beloved grandchildren, Shelby, Darren, Trenton and Kendall. He is also survived by his mother, Yvonne Colby; five sisters, Linda Mattress and her husband John, Joyce Williams, Alice Sequra, Diane Cullen, and Gloria Colby; three brothers, John and Charles Colby, and William Colby and his wife Joanne, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Doug Colby, a brother-in-law, Joseph Williams, and a niece, Bonnie Jo Williams.

He and his family are very thankful for the outstanding care and kindness given them at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, Life Plus and Visiting Nurses Service of Maine whose help allowed him to remain at home through most of his illness.

Harold Colby

Scoutmaster, Troop 369

It is with great sadness that we learned of the untimely passing of Harold Colby, former Scoutmaster of Troop 369. Harold was dedicated to the ideals that Scouting stands for and took great pleasure in working with the youth of Lebanon. His enthusiasm was infectious as was his smile and sense of humor. Under his leadership, the troop was very active with a strong commitment to camping. He spent many summers with the troop at Camp Hinds and offered encouragement as the boys progressed through the ranks.

No memory of Harold would be complete without story or two to better understand him. A couple of stories come quickly to mind. The first occurred at the annual Halloween Party that Harold hosted at his house, which was always a hit. Everyone had a pumpkin to carve and traditional Halloween games to play. Dunking for apples was always popular. One Halloween, the troop egged Harold and Hugh to compete together in the apple dunk. They postponed it as long as they could. Long enough for Harold to come up with a plan. After much good-natured trash talk between Harold and Hugh, the match was on. They squared off opposite each other above the tub of water and the floating apples. The troop counted to 3, whereupon Harold and Hugh politely reached in and each picked up an apple and took a bite. You could hear the troop groan all the way to Rochester.

Another occurred at Camp Hinds when the Scouts were off at merit badge classes and Harold and Hugh were having some coffee in a quiet moment in the campsite. Harold looked up to notice a little red squirrel sitting on his bunk. He said to me "Watch this." and quietly got up and started sneaking up on the squirrel. Harold made it to a tree about 10 feet away from his tent where upon he glanced back at me with a mischievous smile and then jumped out, flailing his arms and yelling at the squirrel who promptly took off. The squirrel had the last laugh, though, for in his flight from the bunk, the squirrel apparently pee'd on his sleeping bag.

Harold will be missed by many, both young and old but he will never be forgotten.
