Email Us		 Photo Lt. Isaac COLBY was born in 1758. His parentage and place of birth are unknown at this time. He likely came from the Sandown, Kingston or Londonderry area of Rockingham County, NH. He eventually settled in what was later to become Springfield, NH and appears in the 1790 Census in Protectworth, Cheshire County, NH Census. Protectworth, NH was incorporated as Springfield, NH in 1794. His name appears on the First Record of Inventory and Taxes for 1794 in Springfield, Cheshire County, NH. He also appears in the 1800 Census in Springfield, Cheshire County, NH on page 22 indicating four males under ten, one male 26 thru 44, one female 10 thru 15, two females 16 thru 25 and one female 26 thru 44. In 1810, he appears on the Census in Springfield listing two males 10 thru 15, one male 16 thru 25, one male 45 and over, and one female 45 and over. His two oldest daughters Betty (or Elizabeth) and Pheby (Phoebe) were married prior to 1810; however this leaves one younger male and female who appeared on the 1800 Census not appearing in 1810. Isaac Colby signed a will on 14 APR 1814. The will and probate records indicated his spouse as Experience Colby, eldest son was Isaac Colby, youngest sons listed as John Colby and Caleb Colby, oldest daughter Betty Avery and youngest daughter Pheby (Phoebe) Heath. The probated estate referred to Isaac Colby as Lt Isaac Colby.

Isaac was working as a carpenter in Middleton when he married Lucy Berry. After a brief residence in Danvers, Mass., they moved to Hampstead village. The land records of Rockingham county show that "Isaac Colby, wheelwright, purchased from Daniel Kimball, blacksmith, for $850, on Dec 29, 1804, a tract of land partly in Hampstead and partly in Londonderry, containing by estimation forty acres, more or less, and bounded as follows, viz.: Beginning at a stake and stone on the southerly side of the road leading from Hampstead to Chester, and by land of Joseph Brickett, thence southwesterly by said Brickett's land 160 rods to a road leading to Londonderry, thence northerly by said road about 40 rods to land of Jabez Hoit, thence northwesterly by said Hoit's land, about 160 rods, to the aforesaid road, thence southeasterly by the road about 40 rods to the bound first mentioned."

The place thus described was the family home for the next seven years.

In 1811, Oct 28, Isaac Colby bought of Thomas Huse, for $4500, Governor's Island, in Island Pond, and the old Wentworth mansion thenceforth was the home of the family, until he deeded the island to Lucy Everett, of Boston, Mass., Sept 8, 1815.

The Colbys then moved to what is now known as Herrick farm and mill, between Derry Dock and Island Pond, which previously had been owned by the father (David, 2d), and the grandfather (David, 1st), of Isaac Colby, and there they dwelt until 1846.

Isaac Colby, though a wheelwright and farmer, was best known in the region as a builder, and according to tradition framed many of the best houses in Hampstead street and in East Derry, one of the last in the latter village being that known as the "Elms Hotel.."

His wife having became a member of the Congregational church, Sept 2, 1810, and having five children baptized in the church May 6, 1812, the family apparently worshipped in Hampstead until 1833, At that time Mrs. Lucy (Berry) Colby was dismissed from the church to the First Church at East Derry, with which church her daughter Lucy united in 1831, her son, James Knight, in 1833, and her son, George W., in 1838.

In 1846, when the infirmities of age led Isaac Colby and his wife to give up the management of the farm and mill (now Herrick) to the son, George Washington, they went to live, after a short stay in Boston, with their son, James K. Colby, in St. Johnsbury, Vt.

Isaac Colby joined the Congregational church by profession of faith, July10. 1853. The few remaining years of their lives were spent peacefully and happily in the home of their son.

Lucy Berry Colby died after a brief illness, Nov 7, 1854, aged 76 years. She was surrounded by her daughter Lucy, her sons, Nathaniel and James K., and when the latter asked her, shortly before her death, if she would like to recover, she replied, "No, why should I? I have lived to a gold old age," and then bolstered up in bed, surprised all by singing the verse beginning, "Fly swift around, ye wheels of time."

Isaac Colby died March 24, 1856, in his 80th year. The bodies of both Isaac Colby and his wife were buried in the Colby lot in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury, Vt., where are also interred the bodies of their sons Nathaniel B. and James K. Colby, and their wives.

The church records in Hampstead contain in the records of baptism the following entry, made while the Colby family dwelt in the Wentworth mansion on Governor's Island: "Nathaniel Baree (should be Berry), Jesse Hoyt, Allen, Lucy, and James Knight (known as James Kelsea Colby in his mature years, but evidently receiving his name from their family physician, Dr. James Knight).

In this City (Concord), June 27, Mrs. Louisa W., wife of Dr. Isaac Colby,aged 65, also, June 28, Dr. Isaac Colby, aged 73.

Dr. Isaac Colby, died this city Thursday evening after a long illness. His wife died Wednesday, thus preceding him to the other life but a few hours. The doctor had not been in practice for several years past, in consequence of feeble health. He was in practice in this city for several years and various other places. -

Isaac Jr. witnessed a deed of his fathers in 1810 [HillsDeeds91:424]. He may be the Isaac who graduated from Dartmouth medical school in 1817. Isaac was a physician in Hopkinton and Salem, Mass. The three children of his first marriage are buried in the Old Cemetery near the Town Hall in Hopkinton Village.

"Isaac Colby, a former physician of Hopkinton, is said to have come here from Bradford, about 1825, and, about 1849, to have gone to Salem, MA. He afterwards returned to Concord, where he died. While in Hopkinton, he practiced allopathy; subsequently, he adopted homeopathy. He did much to improve the appearance of Hopkinton village, being specially instrumental in setting the present row of elms within the Main street and running from the townhouse to the Baptist church."

Dr. Isaac Colby located in Salem in the forties. According to Dr. Elijah U. Jones and Dr. Henry M. Smith, Dr. Colby had practiced allopathy in Concord, N. H., as early as 1839. He began to practice homœopathy in Concord in 1846, went to Salem in 1851, and remained there until his death in 1866. In the list of members of the American Institute of Homœopathy for 1848 is the name of Isaac Colby, Salem, Mass. He is mentioned in 1855 as living in Concord at that time and also in 1866. Dr. Colby was a fellow of the Massachusetts Medical Society, and one who was tried for joining the homœopathists. He died June 29, 1866.

CAPTAIN ISAAC COLBY

One of the oldest, best known and most highly respected residents of St. Clair county, Michigan is Capt. Isaac Colby of Algonac. He was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, October 28, 1820 (Note: should be 1826), his parents being William and Sarah (Clogston) Colby. They were of ancient New England stock, the father having been born in Boston, in 1804, and the mother in Goffstown, New Hampshire, in 1806. The Colby family moved from Boston to New Hampshire, where William Colby grew to manhood, married, settled down in life and there his children were born. They were tillers of the soil, but as that occupation was not profitable among the bleak and barren hills of New Hampshire, the family was neither rich nor affluent. In early life William Colby was a Democrat, but after the organization of the Republican party he affiliated with is and continued to vote that ticket while he lived. Eight children were born to William and Sarah Colby, two of whom died in infancy. Of the six who lived and grew to manhood, three, William, Matthew and Timothy are now dead. Those living are Isaac, Charles E., a resident of Detroit, and Andrew J., who resides in San Francisco. William Colby was a member of the Universalist church and a firm believer in its broad and liberal doctrines. He was able to provide well for his family, giving each of his children the advantage of a fair education and assisting them in starting out in life for themselves.

The early years of the life of Isaac Colby were spent amidst the freedom of the New England hills. At the age of fourteen years, after he had acquired some knowledge of letters and books, he went to Waltham, Massachusetts, and there became skilled as a merchant tailor. For a number of years he traveled about the country as a journeyman tailor, remaining only a few years in each place. He was three years at Hopkinston, New Hampshire, then went to Manchester, for two years; from there to Brattleborough, Vermont, where he remained three years; next to Albany, New York, for two years; then came westward and about the year 1852 settled in West Detroit, Michigan. His travels through the country and work in the different localities had thoroughly skilled him in his calling and given him a satisfactory knowledge of life and of human nature. He took a broad, comprehensive view of the world and its people, and, though liberal in his views, he was ardent and aggressive in the advocacy of any cause he espoused. When the war of the Rebellion broke out it found in him an enthusiastic supporter of the Lincoln administration and of the Union. Abandoning his needle, bench and goose, the erstwhile tailor turned his attention to the raising of troops for the war. He was no long in enrolling about two hundred of the stalwart youths of eastern Michigan and was soon much gratified by the receipt, from Governor Blair, of a commission as captain of Company E, Fourth Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Much of the time, however, he was in command of three companies. A member of his command, John B. Bradley, had a brief but decisive experience with a rebel sharpshooter. The latter had ensconced himself in a tree not a great distance away from the location of Captain Colby’s command, and was picking off the men with a precision and regularity worthy of a better cause. Bradley’s sharp eyes located him in his leafy quarters and with a well-directed shot he sent him toppling to the ground. He then walked over to where the rebel lay weltering in blood, found him dead and quickly relieving him of his possessions, shouldered his musket and returned to his command amidst the cheers of his comrades. The command of Captain Colby was not always in touch with the commissary department and frequently was left dependent upon its own resources for supplies. On many occasions he and his men were detailed on foraging expeditions, wherein they were expected to supply the wants of the entire regiment and so often were they assigned to duty of this kind that they became quite expert at the business, very little escaping them in the way of eatables on the plantations they visited. They were located for a length of time at various points in Alabama, among them at Whittsburg and Huntsville. During its entire service the Fourth Michigan Infantry acquitted itself most creditably. At one time Captain Colby was given by General Granger his choice of three important points that were to be held and guarded, the most important being Crow Creek, Alabama. This was chosen by Captain Colby, and he held it in spite of the repeated attacks of the enemy. The regiment was later transferred from Alabama to Memphis, Tennessee, and at the close of the war was mustered out.

At the close of hostilities Captain Colby returned to Michigan and settled in Detroit. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Hannah (Smoot) Fleming, and they had five children, three of whom are dead. Sarah F. is the wife of Capt. H. C. Harrow, of Algonac; Mary, deceased, was the wife of George Fisher, a merchant tailor. The present Mrs. Colby, to whom the Captain was married April 6, 1892, was Miss Hannah Allison, a native of England, and reared in Sandwich, Ontario, who had resided in Michigan about ten years previous to her marriage. She had learned telegraphy in Canada and had charge of the office at Sandwich for thirteen years. In his early manhood Captain Colby was a Democrat; that, however, was before the organization of the Republican party, and during and since the war he has been quite active in politics, affiliating with the Republican party. He is a member of the Universalist church and a firm believer in the broad and liberal teachings of that denomination. He was ever kind, generous and charitable all his life, a man who readily made friends and had little difficulty in keeping them. He is a member of the G. A. R., being elected commander of Harvey Tucker Post when past eighty years old, and loves to meet and talk with the few old comrades in arms who are left. At one time he was the owner of a tract of land that is now a part of West Detroit. If put on the market today it would easily bring one million dollars. He has seen much of nature and of life in all its phases. He knows some of the hardships and much of the delights that people encountered during the elapse of the last three score and ten years.

Isaac taught school at Curley School, District Number Three, Bowne Township, Kent County, Michigan before the Civil War.

It is unknown where he received his education or how he came to teach thirty miles from his home.

In 1861, at the age of 19, Isaac volunteered for military service. Isaac was in Co F, 18th Regular Infantry during the Civil War. He fought at "Perryville, Stone River Gap, Chickamounga, Missionary Ridge and through the Georgia Campaign. He was wounded at New Hope Church Gap in May 1864" He remained in the service untill honorably discharged in 1865.

After Isaac was discharged, he returned to Bowne Township, Kent County, Michigan to resume his teaching profession. He then married Delia Miller of Alto, Michigan. They settled on a farm in Courtland Township.

Sometime in 1868, they returned to Bowne Township, and built a two story log house, four bedrooms upstairs (reached by a ladder) Downstairs was another bedroom, a kitchen and a living room. Isaac joined the Alto Baptist Church

According to the journal Isaac kept in 1891, his assets were 4800 dollars plus 357 bushels of wheat and 196 bushels of oats. He had 80 acres of improved land and Delia, his wife, had 20 acres of land in her name. During 1891, Isaac and Delia paid out 466.31 dollars, out of this the following was used for education in the manner listed:

ISABELLA (COLBY) PINKHAM

NEWPORT - Isabella C. Pinkham, 96, went to be with the Lord Nov. 6, 2005. She was born Oct. 1, 1909, in Richmond, a daughter of Lineus and Marjorie (Cunningham) Colby. She married John Pinkham in 1931, and they moved to Newport that year. They enjoyed hunting and fishing and she enjoyed cooking and caring for her pets. Isabella was a member of the Solid Rock Church of God in Pittsfield and the Newport Senior Citizens Club.

She was predeceased by John in 1978; three sons, John Jr. in 1932, Wilber in 1936 and Bernard in 1952.

She is survived by two daughters, Esther and husband, Fred Temple, of Palmyra and Julia "Judy" and husband, Robert Herring, of Cundy's Harbor; a son, Maurice of Newport; a brother, LeRoy Colby of Wiscasset; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Newport, followed by a graveside funeral service at Riverside Cemetery, Newport.
