Charlton man’s life: Mishaps, family, fun

CHARLTON — If there’s something people will remember about Chan Colby, it was that he was a funny guy who was able to shrug off and laugh at the curious series of mishaps life had dealt him.

“If something was going to happen, it was going to happen to Chan,” said Worcester Fire District Chief Frank D. DiLiddo III, a family friend.

But what happened to Mr. Colby as he walked on a darkened stretch of Route 20 Wednesday, not far from the home he shared with his mother, was something no one could shrug off.

Police believe Mr. Colby, 44, was attempting to cross the two lanes of westbound traffic, having already crossed the eastbound side of the highway, when he was struck by a car and killed. A second car may have grazed him. Both drivers stopped, but there was nothing they could do.

A state trooper went to Mr. Colby’s home on Northside Road and gave his mother the bad news. His older sister was shaken. Her only sibling — the younger brother who once cast his fishing line into the pond with such vigor he followed behind with a splash — was gone.

Kelly A. Brunelle, like all big sisters, alternately loved and fought with her brother on the 99 country acres where they grew up. Once while riding in a go-cart, he nearly took a terrible tumble down a steep hill and into a pond. He might have been killed, had he not gotten hung up on a stump.

“Things were always happening to Chan,” Ms. Brunelle said.

“It was like he had nine lives, but . . .” her voice trailed off.

And he was an excellent uncle.

“He was close to my three children,” Ms. Brunelle said. Mr. Colby had recently taken a trip to Ohio with Ms. Brunelle’s oldest son to visit an uncle. He thought family was the most important thing. Even his name, a shortened version of Channing, his legal name, was from family.

And he was the touchstone that kept family and friends in contact.

“We were always in touch,” she said. “We’d talk three, four times a week. He loved his family ... he was a keep-in-touch sort of guy, it was vitally important to him.”

But he was also an outdoorsman, a fit former Marine whose motto was “Live strong or die.” He was comfortable climbing utility poles for Verizon, riding a four-wheeler or camping, and often walked great distances, making Wednesday night’s trek something that wasn’t unusual. He had dated, his sister said, but he “just never found Mrs. Right.”

This year it was important for him to have a real Christmas tree and a few days ago, he’d gone to the woods, chopped one down and decorated it. It’s likely he would have put an unusual piece of jewelry underneath for his sister. She thought it would have been something she’d love for its uniqueness, like the silver-rimmed, bright yellow scallop shell pendant she pondered in her jewelry box yesterday, wondering whether she should put it on.

Mr. Colby was also a “give you the shirt off his back” type of person, Chief DiLiddo recalled. At Charlton Federated Church on Main Street, where his memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, he had been working on plans for a mission trip in March to help Hurricane Katrina victims rebuild.
